Lead Backend Engineer — AI-Native Platform

Nigeria Full-time Undisclosed
Job Description
About the Role

We are building a next-generation AI-native platform and are looking for an experienced backend engineer to help architect and build the core systems that power intelligent commerce, workflow automation, fulfilment, payments, and operational decision-making.

This is not a traditional ecommerce role. You will be working on complex backend systems that combine commerce infrastructure, workflow orchestration, AI-assisted automation, and large-scale operational processes.

What you'll be building

• Backend services in TypeScript and Node.js.

• Commerce systems on Medusa v2, anchored to an ERP that stays the source of truth — Medusa projects catalogue and writes orders back, never the other way around. (Respecting that boundary is central to how we keep money and data correct.)

• Workflow and orchestration systems for checkout, payments, compliance, and fulfilment.

• AI-assisted operational and customer-facing workflows.

• Event-driven services, platform APIs, and the integrations that connect commerce, payments, and logistics.

• Scalable systems supporting international commerce operations.

Required skills

Backend engineering

• 5+ years backend engineering experience — production systems, not just features.

• Strong TypeScript and Node.js.

• PostgreSQL and relational database design; Redis or similar.

• REST APIs, webhooks, queues, and asynchronous processing.

• Distributed systems and scalable architecture.

Medusa v2 — a firm requirement

• Real production experience with Medusa v2 specifically. We rely on Medusa v2's workflow engine, validate hooks, payment module, and region/currency abstraction — this isn't a build you can pick up from Medusa v1 or generic headless-commerce experience alone.

• Custom workflows and module development; checkout, order, payment, and fulfilment flows.

• Comfortable integrating Medusa with an external ERP system of record.

Workflow & systems design

• Workflow orchestration, state management, and event-driven architecture.

• Idempotency, retries, and failure recovery.

• Background jobs and queue-based processing.

• Experience with Temporal, BullMQ, Kafka, EventBridge, Cadence, or similar is highly desirable.

AI & automation

• Experience with one or more of: LangGraph, LangChain, RAG, vector databases, agentic workflows, or production LLM applications.

Experience we value highly

Headless commerce · marketplaces · OMS · inventory · payments infrastructure · logistics and fulfilment · ERP integrations · cross-border or compliance-heavy platforms.

Leadership & working style

We're looking for someone who:

• Thinks from first principles and designs systems from concept to production.

• Makes architectural decisions confidently and documents them clearly.

• Cares about building things that are accurate and defensible, not just demo-ready.

• Enjoys hard engineering problems and is comfortable in a startup with real ownership.

• Wants to grow into an engineering leadership role.

Nice to have

Next.js · Python · ERPNext / Frappe · Stripe integrations · AWS / GCP · open-source contributions · startup experience · experience mentoring or leading engineers.

Why join us

• A genuinely challenging AI-native commerce platform to build from the ground up.

• Founding-level ownership and technical influence.

• Direct access to the founder and to decision-making.

• A clear path into engineering leadership.

• Salary plus equity — you share in what you build.

To apply

Send your CV, LinkedIn, and GitHub (if available), and a short answer to one question — it tells us more than a long CV:

Pay: ₦700,000.00 - ₦1,000,000.00 per month

Application Question(s):

• Describe a production system you built that required retries, failure recovery, workflow orchestration, or transaction management. What were the biggest challenges and how did you solve them?

• Send your GitHub

Experience:

• backend engineering experience.: 5 years (Preferred)

• Production experience with Medusa v2.: 3 years (Preferred)
