Accountant – Government Contracting
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accountant to join our Finance and Accounting team. This is a hands-on role with responsibility across month-end close, general ledger accounting, accounts payable, compliance, and financial reporting.
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in federal government contracting accounting, along with experience supporting month-end close and accounts payable operations. This position is well suited for an accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership of their work, collaborating across teams, and ensuring financial information is accurate, timely, compliant, and audit-ready.
This position requires working onsite in our Tysons Corner, VA office four (4) days per week, with one remote day per week.
Key Responsibilities
Month-End Close & General Ledger
• Lead and manage the month-end close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
• Maintain the general ledger and ensure transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP, FAR, CAS, and company policies.
• Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting documentation.
• Prepare monthly bank and credit card reconciliations.
• Analyze account balances and financial variances and provide clear explanations to management.
• Maintain organized, audit-ready financial records and supporting documentation.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to support business and leadership decisions.
Accounts Payable & Transaction Processing
• Oversee day-to-day accounts payable activities, including invoice review, coding, approvals, and payment processing.
• Ensure timely and accurate processing and recording of vendor invoices, vendor payments, billings, and customer payments.
• Ensure AP transactions comply with FAR requirements, internal controls, and company policies.
• Maintain positive vendor relationships and research and resolve invoice or payment discrepancies.
• Prepare AP accruals and reconciliations in support of month-end close.
• Support annual 1099 reporting and reconciliation activities.
Compliance & Reporting
• Prepare and submit required government reports related to payroll and labor compliance.
• Support internal, external, and government audits by providing accurate and timely documentation.
• Maintain current knowledge of federal government contracting regulations, accounting standards, and compliance requirements.
• Help ensure accounting practices and documentation remain audit-ready and compliant with applicable requirements.
Accounting & Financial Support
• Support the day-to-day operations of the Finance and Accounting department.
• Partner with Contracts, Program Management, and Human Resources to ensure accurate labor charging and billing in accordance with contract requirements.
• Analyze payroll and AP activity and provide insights to support financial decision-making.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase financial reporting efficiency.
• Support system enhancements and other Finance and Accounting initiatives as needed.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• 5+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years within a government contracting environment.
• Demonstrated experience with month-end close, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and accounts payable.
• Strong knowledge of Service Contract Act (SCA) compliance and wage determinations.
• Hands-on experience with government contracting ERP/accounting systems such as Unanet and/or Deltek.
• Working knowledge of FAR, CAS, GAAP, and federal contracting accounting requirements.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and familiarity with payroll systems.
• Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership of responsibilities, and effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Experience
• Hands-on Unanet experience is strongly preferred.
• CPA or CMA preferred.
• Experience supporting federal contractor audits and compliance activities.
• Experience working cross-functionally with Contracts, Program Management, HR, and other corporate teams.
